A WOMAN’S body has been recovered from the North Sea after initial reports of a car being abandoned at a landmark location in Whitley Bay.
Police were called to St Mary’s Island just after 7am today (Tuesday) after receiving reports of a car on the causeway connecting the island with the mainland.
Officers arrived and carried out a search of the immediate area, where they found a woman nearby in the water.
They pulled her from the water and carried out CPR.
A police spokesperson said: “Officers at the scene attempted to revive the woman until paramedics arrived.
“But when the paramedics arrived, they found that the woman had died.
“The family of the woman are being informed and the death has been passed to the coroner.”
