AN event held to promote reading made waves at a council leisure centre.
Shirley Hallam called in at the Waves Leisure Pool in Whitley Bay to hand out 20 copies of Kazuo Ishiguro’s Booker Prize-winning The Remains of the Day as part of World Book Night.
Shirley, president of Soroptimist International’s Tynemouth and Whitley Bay branch, said: “I chose this book because I believe it to be a contemporary classic.
“The author gives a beautiful picture of life between the wars in a great English house.”
More than 20,000 volunteers around the country distributed more than two million copies of 25 books to mark the international event.
