TYNE and Wear’s Metro network was given a £4m boost by George Osborne’s autumn statement last week.
The cash was promised by the Chancellor of the Exchequer to accelerate an ongoing programme of investment in the system.
The current upgrade of the Metro system is one of 35 road and rail schemes nationwide identified by Mr Osborne as being crucial in supporting economic development.
It will add to the £40m already promised to upgrade the Metro network’s infrastructure.
Nexus director-general Bernard Garner said: “We welcome the government’s commitment to our continuing programme to modernise the Tyne and Wear Metro, and we will be working closely with the Department for Transport to ensure the effective delivery of this infrastructure project.”
