North east bakery firm Greggs is to use proceeds from the carrier bag charge introduced last year to fund a new partnership with environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.
The UK’s leading takeaway food retailer, based in Newcastle and North Tyneside, is donating a percentage of its bag charge proceeds to the charity to support its work to reduce litter.
In addition, the funding will help support the charity’s efforts to teach young people about environmental issues such as waste, energy and litter.
The charity’s chief executive, Allison Ogden-Newton, said: “It is great to see a responsible business like Greggs recognise the need for the work of Keep Britain Tidy.
“The quality of the local environment – the way the places we all live in look and feel – is vitally important, and our work to encourage and support communities, educate and inform needs support from every section of society.
“We are delighted that Greggs has chosen to support Keep Britain Tidy and look forward to developing some exciting and innovative projects with them over the next 12 months.”
