MORE than 100 staff at Wallsend’s Tyne Metropolitan College were set to go on strike today over changes to their pay and pensions.
Members of the University and College Union (UCU) were due to walk out over plans to ask for bigger pension contributions from staff and to put up their pension age.
UCU members from various educational institutions were planning to man picket lines across the region this morning before marching to the Monument in Newcastle for a rally at lunchtime.
UCU regional official Iain Owens said: “Strike action is always a last resort, but the attacks on pensions and pay have created real anger and, instead of burying their heads in the sand, employers need to respond to our concerns.
“Staff are sick to the back teeth of being told that their pay and pensions need to be cut to pay for an economic crisis created by others.”
