WORKERS at a North Shields factory have been told they are losing their jobs.
The 52 employees at the Recticel Carobel plant in Norham Road, which manufactures memory foam, are being laid off in order to save the jobs of workers elsewhere in the UK.
A spokesperson for parent company Recticel UK said: “Since July 1, Recticel UK has been in consultation with the workforce at Carobel about the potential closure of the site.
“During this time ideas about alternative solutions have been investigated and a number of consultation meetings have taken place to explore these ideas.
“Unfortunately these consultations have not resulted in an alternative outcome.
“It is therefore with regret that the company has decided it must close the Carobel site.”
It is planned that manufacturing will fully cease at North Shields by the end of the year.
The spokesperson added: “Recticel employs 521 people across six plants in the flexible foam division in the UK and whilst the loss of 52 jobs at Carobel is deeply regrettable it will help safeguard the employment of the remaining 469 jobs and future of the other the units.
“The company will endeavour to do everything it can to support the Carobel employees over the coming months as we wind down production.”
