A FAMILY run business is bucking the trend with the opening of a new outlet.

Whitley Bay-based Pantrini’s Fish & Chips is now serving from North Shields as well after owner Lee Taylor bought and refurbished the old Victoria pub in William Street.

The former derelict building on the corner of Borough Road has been completely refurbished and Mayor Linda Arkley was on hand to perform the official opening ceremony.

The venture has also created eight new jobs.

Lee said the expansion to North Shields worked perfectly for the business because of the traditional industry in the area.

“Due to the history of the Fish Quay it’s an area that fully understands quality fish and chips,” he said.

“We wanted to bring a quality, traditional, British offering to the town centre, which is why we’ve positioned ourselves between the Metro station and the bus terminus.

“And many of our existing customers are already from the North Shields area.”

Last year Pantrini’s won the Seafish Staff Training and Development Award.

Lee added: “After winning at the Fish & Chip Shop of the Year awards last year, the response has been amazing.

“We were very proud to win it for the north east, proving the quality of our fish and chips are as high as any in the land.”

The new shop has also been transformed with a meticulous attention to detail with the interior refurbishment, paying heed to the local community with full walls covered with pictures of North Shields taken 20 to 30 years ago.

Lee added: “It is an incredibly exciting opportunity.

“And we’d like to thank the mayor, who was only too willing to oblige and officially open our new shop.”
