Yard hands out £500k contract

OFFSHORE Group Newcastle (OGN) has handed out a £500,000 contract for work at its Wallsend yard to a Scottish firm.

Aberdeen-based OIE Services will carry out maintenance and operational services during the construction of a new oil production platform at the firm’s Hadrian Yard.

Craig Melville OGN’s chief commercial officer, said: “We have been impressed with OIE’s technical capabilities and its sound appreciation of the operating environment associated with the Forties Alpha satellite platform we are building in Wallsend.

“These issues, together with the safety-critical nature of the services OIE is providing, played a major part in OGN’s decision to award it the contract.”

The OGN group is building a satellite oil production platform for the UK Forties field to be linked by a bridge to the existing Forties Alpha installation.

Fred Carruthers, maintenance engineering manager at OIE, said: “Safety of personnel is paramount, so getting the maintenance right is absolutely crucial.

“We are delighted to have been awarded this contract.”

Onshore construction of the platform is expected to be complete by mid-2012.
