An award-winning green energy company is making waves by working to safeguard the future of a unique visitor attraction.
North Tyneside-based Opus Green is helping Stanhope Open Air Swimming Pool, in Weardale, replace a boiler after one of the four failed completely.
Stanhope Pool Ltd chairman Peter Thompson decided to find a sustainable energy solution rather than simply replacing the current boilers, turning to Opus Green’s managing director Chris Cassells.
Peter: “Chris said straight away that there were solutions which would be more efficient, cheaper to run and far more environmentally friendly.
“The new heating system will cost about £35,000 and we’ve asked Durham County Council for £20,000, with the remainder coming from money we’ve raised.
“However, with the efficiencies the new system would bring, the council’s contribution to the pool’s annual energy costs would be reduced by about 20 per cent.”
Chris said: “There were several possible solutions, but the emphasis was on saving money and energy, and simplicity of the equipment, so that ruled out biomass boilers and ground source heat pumps.
“Due to the large volume of water and our great British weather solar and renewable energy on its own couldn’t heat the outdoor pool efficiently but it is able to work in conjunction with high efficient gas boilers and play an important part in significantly reducing the reliance on fossil fuels such as gas.
“The option we’ve recommended is for two new energy efficient condensing boilers and 38 solar PV panels which will feed immersion heaters in a buffer bank which would reduce the gas consumption for the boilers.
“It’s been a really interesting project to work on, and the pool is crying out for a sustainable energy solution. It’s an important asset for the town and the dale and I’m sure our solution would safeguard its future for years to come.”
Opus Green was founded by Chris and business partner Gavin Richardson in 2010 and is based on the Newcastle Business Village, North Tyneside.
It specialises in reducing energy bills for businesses and homeowners through green energy solutions and was named best start-up company in the North Tyneside Business Awards a year after its launch.
