THE first Metro train to receive a major makeover returned to Nexus’ North Shields yard on Friday.

Metrocar 4041, the first of 90 to be stripped down and refitted by a company in Doncaster, was transported to the Hylton Street yard on a low loader.

It now has a light metallic grey and black finish, incorporating the bright yellow brand colour of the Metro.

The new scheme replaces the current red, green and blue carriages, which date back to the mid 1990s.

Metro trains which are more than 30-years-old are being upgraded as part of a £385m modernisation programme.

The trains are being transported by road to Doncaster, where they are stripped down, refitted and repainted.

Nexus’ director general Bernard Garner said: “We are looking forward to getting the new look train back into service very soon and passengers can be assured that there will be more to follow.”
