Kind-hearted building society customers have a can-do attitude when it comes to charity support.

Members of the Leeds Building Society have been collecting tins of food for north east homeless charity The People’s Kitchen.

Donations were accepted at branches across the region, including Whitley Bay, North Shields, Wallsend and the society’s processing centre at Silverlink Business Park, with a total of 380 cans collected.

Customer service advisor Verena Harrigan, who organised the initiative, said: “The People’s Kitchen helps so many people in Newcastle to have a warm meal at least once in the day. We have had collections for the charity in the past, but the need for the food supply never goes away.

“A collection of foodstuffs at Christmas time seemed a really nice thing for the north east branches to do.”

Charity trustee Peter Samuel said: “We rely on donations of food to help us meet the growing demand from our friends.”
