Plans to brighten up Christmas for visitors to a borough shopping centre have received a boost from Tesco.

The supermarket giant donated £250 to the Whitley Lodge Community Spirit group, which is organising the Christmas celebrations.

Plans include a Christmas fair, a carol concert with local schoolchildren and a visit from Santa on his sleigh.

Southridge First School visited the shopping centre this week, where some of their designs from a painting competition are on show in the Tesco store for customers to pick the winners.

Store manager Allison Woods said: “As the UK’s biggest retailer we can use our size for the good of the community.

“Our support for Whitley Lodge Community Spirit is intended to do just that.

“It’s about working together, creating jobs and giving local people what they want.”

Reverend Benjamin Carter, of St Mary the Virgin in Monkseaton, chairs Whitley Lodge Community Spirit.

He said: “We have a fantastic festive season planned.

“Everybody is working together to make the centre as attractive as possible and to join in with the community as we celebrate Christmas.”
