Generous North Shields shoppers have dipped into their pockets to raise thousands of pounds for a cancer charity.
Staff and customers at the town’s Wilko store, in Bedford Street, have collected more than £5,400 over the past year for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The organisation, which provides practical, emotional, medical and financial support to people with cancer and their families, was the shop’s regional charity of the year.
Store manager Sarah Deary said: “What a fantastic year we’ve had raising money for Macmillan. We’ve proved that where there’s a Wilko, there’s a way to support good causes in our area.”
The money could fund a nurse for five weeks.
