A cafe supporting local people with special needs has been recognised at a prestigious regional awards event.

The Cornerstone Cafe, in Whitley Bay, was chosen as the winner of The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Team Award at Newcastle Building Society’s annual Cornerstone of the Community Awards.

The family-run Cornerstone Cafe hosts and is involved with the local Cornerstone group, which works to support the rights of people with special needs.

Natalie Falkous, head of corporate social responsibility at the Society, said: “Our Awards always unearth some amazing stories, and the Cornerstone Cafe team is a fantastic example of how people can make a real difference to their community.

“We’ve always worked hard to support the communities in which we operate, and the wider Cornerstone campaign allows us to do this through supporting groups.”
