Calls spark coast search

RESCUE teams were called out after reports of a possible red flare off the coast.

Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade were called out at 5.20pm on Saturday, November 10, after the Coastguard received two reports of a possible flare somewhere between Cullercoats Bay and St Mary’s Island.

Initial reports said the flare may have been fired by a vessel close to the shore.

Despite poor visibility, reduced to 150-yards due to the darkness, the TVLB members carried out a detailed search of the area but after 30 minutes, and with no further flares sighted or vessels reported overdue, they stood down.
