Four cars were set alight by a suspected arsonist.

Police are appealing for information after the cars were set alight in Holly Avenue, Wallsend.

Officers were called to the street at 3.43am today (Wednesday) after reports of one car on fire.

However, when they attended they found three other cars had been damaged after being separately set on fire in the street.

It is believed the fires were started deliberately and are being treated as arson.

No-one was injured, but extensive damage was caused to the cars.

Neighbourhood Inspector Mark Storey, who covers the area, said: “If anyone was in Holywell Avenue or the surrounding area last night and saw anyone acting suspiciously or anything out of the ordinary we’d urge them to contact police.

“Extra officers will be in the area to help prevent any further incidents and reassure residents. A number of enquiries are underway to identify the offender.”
