Staff and pupils marked the end of their school year with a special celebratory event after inspectors gave their school the top rating.

Officials at New York Primary School in North Shields held the celebration day for the whole community after Ofsted rating the school ‘outstanding’ for the second time.

The event was held just before the pupils broke up for their summer holidays and recognised the success of the children in music, sport and more.

Visitors were entertained during the afternoon by steel pans, samba drumming and dancers.

Headteacher Lesley Colthart said she was delighted the school had received a second consecutive ‘outstanding’ report.

In the latest report, inspectors said that pupils made rapid and sustained progress while teaching is ‘outstanding’.

It added: “The passion, drive and forward-thinking of the headteacher are shared by all staff. Together, they have taken highly effective action to improve literacy skills.”

Pupils were praised for being ‘extremely well behaved’ and their commitment while governors had a visible presence in school.
