Hundreds of pounds has been raised for a charitable organisation thanks to the generosity of shoppers.

More than £1,100 was collected at Santa’s Grotto in the Beacon Shopping Centre, North Shields, during December in aid of the North Shields Fishermen’s Mission.

The Mission offers assistance to the families of fishermen who have been killed or seriously injured, supports survivors of fishing boat accidents and provides financial and emotional support to retired fishermen and their families.

Dave Menzies, centre manager at The Beacon, said: “We have a longstanding relationship with The Fishermen’s Mission.

“The fishing industry is a very distinct and important part of our local heritage and the cause is close to the hearts of our staff and community.

“Therefore, we are pleased to have supported them through our Christmas campaign for a third year and are proud to see the funds we have raised going right back into our community.”

Superintendent Peter Dade, Mission Area Officer at the Fisherman’s Mission North Shields, said: “The Beacon Shopping Centre is an integral part of the North Shields community and we are grateful that they provide us with space year on year to raise funds for the mission.

“The funds raised will help local and retired fishermen, as well as those affected by fishing tragedies and accidents in the north east.”
