HUNDREDS of items of food produce have been donated to those less well off by a building society’s customers.

Leeds Building Society in North Shields last week handed over more than 500 tins of food and other items to the People’s Kitchen in Newcastle, after an appeal to their customers.

Branch manager Angela Rowley said: “We set a challenge to raise 500 tins of food for The People’s Kitchen around the north east branches of the Leeds Building Society, and we were delighted when we actually collected a total of 524 tins.

“On behalf of Leeds Building Society I would like to say a big thank you to all of the customers who supported this charity event.

“It was amazing to see our customers donating especially at a time when everyone is feeling the crunch.

“It demonstrated a great community feeling and a sense of pride.”

The People’s Kitchen in Bath Lane, Newcastle, was founded in 1985 by Alison Kay, and works to prepare food to be served in the centre or via mobile outreach services.
