A NORTH Shields charity has been given more than £8,000 to spend on creating an orchard.
Meadow Well Connected has been awarded £8,626 by the People’s Postcode Trust, a charity funded by the People’s Postcode Lottery.
The organisation will use the money to create an orchard in its Waterville Road grounds for use as an educational resource for children and other residents of the town.
Project manager Carole Bell said: “Our plan is to plant 50 two-year-old fruit trees and 190 berry and fruit bushes around the perimeter fence of our gardens.
“We see this project as being a tremendous learning opportunity, especially for our young people, as to the importance of nature to the food we grow.
“Our organisation aims to encourage participation and empower disadvantaged people to achieve their personal potential by offering training and support that allow them to gain new skills and confidence.
“We are delighted that we have received a funding boost, thanks to players of a charity lottery.”
The centre also plans to install six beehives in its orchard and will train volunteers in beekeeping.
