A talented teenager has scooped a prestigious award for her outstanding research work.

Charlotte Duff, a Year 13 student at Whitley Bay High School, collected the honour from the Royal Society of Chemistry, at the ‘Big Bang Fair’ in Birmingham.

This award has really motivated me to continue with my science studies.

The 18-year-old presented results of a study she carried out last summer at Newcastle University where she worked on a Nuffield Foundation research placement.

Her project involved isolating proteins that could be used as early indicators of urinary tract infections in humans.

Early identification leads to earlier intervention and therefore better outcomes for patients.

Charlotte, from North Shields, said: “I was delighted to win, especially considering the level of competition.

“This award has really motivated me to continue with my science studies.”
