Pupils have been packing up essentials to help out homeless people in the north east.

Youngsters at St Columba’s Primary School in Wallsend collected donations of clothes, food, drinks and toiletries to be distributed to those in need by Shining Stars.

The organisation was set up by friends Joanne Rutherford, Carly Michael and Emily Davison in November after they were moved by the death of Whitley Bay homeless man Darren Robson.

Now they collect donations to hand out to homeless people on the streets of Newcastle.

The school’s donations were presented to the team at Wallsend Memorial Hall.

Ms Rutherford said: “We were very much moved by the kindness of not only the pupils and staff, but also the parents who have also got involved.

“We look forward to working with other schools.”
