A fish and chip shop is hoping to leave its competition feeling battered after being shortlisted for a national award.

Oceans, based on North Shields Fish Quay, has made it through to the North East England area final of the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year Award, which is part of the 2014 National Fish and Chip Awards.

After winning the Northumberland, County Durham and Tyne and Wear section, they have been pitted against Yorkshire winners Quayside, of Whitby.

An unannounced inspection took place at Oceans last week, with bosses hoping to find out this week if they had won and made it to the national final in London in January.

Johnathon Riches, of Oceans, said: “A customer put us forward for the awards and then we got a phone call asking if we wanted to be involved, adding there would be a ‘mystery shopper’.

“We then won through to the next round where we’re up against the overall winner from North, South, East and West Yorkshire.

“I’m over the moon to have been shortlisted. When you put a lot of hard work in, it’s nice to see it getting acknowledged. The team have worked really well.”
