A choir has helped raise the roof in a fund-raising appeal.

The 60 strong Backworth Male Voice Choir, founded by the local miners of Backworth Colliery in 1951, organised a fund-raising event in aid of the North Shields Fishermen’s Heritage Project (NSFHP).

The Male Voice Choir were joined by members of Radcliffe Ladies Choir, who travelled from Nottingham to support the event, to perform a range of stirring songs to a packed hall.

The event raised more than £1,000 for the fishermen’s memorial.

Keith Spedding, NSFHP fundraiser, said: “We are now so close to reaching our target of £75,000 for the memorial, and this fundraising event has taken us yet another step nearer. We are delighted that so many people from the local community turned out to support a wonderful evening.”

“Many thanks are due to Joe Hewison, Brian Kerr and John Swinburne of Backworth Male Voice Choir for making it all happen, and of course to all members of both choirs.”
