A MILITARY charity has been given a £15,000 boost by a Whitley Bay church.
St John’s Methodist Church, in Ilfracombe Gardens, raised £15,143 for Help for Heroes by holding a military band concert, sponsored bike ride, film night, charity auction and several coffee mornings.
Organiser Keith Todhunter also persuaded several businesses to chip in, including Nicholson’s Butchers, the 129 Coffee Shop and Scott’s Bakery, all in Whitley Bay, Backworth’s CW Tents and Monkseaton’s Seashells fish-and-chip shop.
Keith and his friend Tony Bennett raised £2,500 by taking part in a tandem skydive.
Keith said: “I was petrified at first, but it helped that Tony was with me.
“Afterwards, I felt exhilarated that I’d completed it.
“I was astounded that we were able to raise so much.
“From being very young, I’ve always been full of admiration for what the forces do.
“I’m also very grateful to the people on the fundraising committee for all their hard work.”
