A church is holding a family fun day as it marks its 140th anniversary.

St Mary the Virgin’s Church, in High Howdon, Wallsend, will be hosting the event on Sunday to celebrate its consecration and first service on July 6, 1876.

The day starts with an all-age worship at the 9.30am communion with children dressed in fancy dress while adults will wear hats, shawls and dresses from the era.

A pooled luncheon will be followed by games for young and old. There will be a raffle, bouncy castle and slide, group singing, barbecue, cream teas and refreshments.

A history of the church and area will be displayed inside, along with photographs of marriages and christenings at the church and information of St Mary’s interests and activities today.

At 3pm there will be a Songs of Praise.

A church spokesperson said: “Let us celebrate not just the building of the church but just as important those now gone who over the years gave their time and love, as well of those of today, to support and care for the faith and fellowship of St Mary’s and of the community we serve.”
