A North Tyneside sports club has smashed it when it comes to community spirit.

For North Shields based Bewicke Badminton Club has been so strong in contributing to the sport and its neighbourhood that it has received an Extra Mile Award.

The gong, awarded by the Northumberland Badminton Association and provided by Yehlex (UK), is normally for individuals, but the efforts of club members could not be separated.

When the club moved from Newcastle to John Spence Community High School three years ago it was struggling, but its members and school staff have turned it around, as well as volunteering at numerous tournaments and local events.

Association secretary Norma Waterfield said: “I have never known a club with such a wonderful group of willing volunteers. They are a credit to the sport.”
