Residents are warned to be on their guard after two teenagers claimed to be raising money for Whitley Bay Football Club.
The pair said they were collecting money so the club’s under 17s team could play in a football tournament in Barcelona.
The teenagers, who had a printed piece of paper with the club’s logo on it, were challenged as they knocked on a door in Newlands Avenue, Monkseaton last week and made off empty-handed.
Police are reminding residents to be cautious when doorstep callers turn up at their home unannounced, and to ring police if they have any concerns.
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 ext 69191.
