Detectives investigating a robbery at a building society in Wallsend back in March have released CCTV footage of the incident.
At 1:20pm on Friday, March 15, a man walked into the Nationwide Building Society, on High Street East in Wallsend, and handed a note to staff saying that he had a gun and telling them to pass him cash, which they did.
He then left the building with an amount of cash. No gun was seen and no one was injured.
DC Keith Howells, from the force’s Major Crime Team, said: “I’d urge people to take a look at the CCTV footage and if they recognise the man to come forward and speak to us as soon as possible.
“The man actually comes into the store three times and is captured on CCTV on each occasion.
“The first time he is seen hanging around outside the branch doors before coming in, putting his hood up, and going up to the counter.
“He then leaves the store and comes back again, this time with a striped hat on.
“The third time, and this is the time the robbery happens, he comes in without any hat or hood on and takes the cash.
“I’d appeal for anyone who was in the High Street in Wallsend that day and saw a man hanging around the outside of the bank acting suspiciously to contact us.
“Anyone who thinks they recognise the man, or who has any information that could help us with our enquiries into the robbery, to get in touch with either police on 101 or by ringing Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
“If you pass information through Crimestoppers you can do it anonymously and could qualify for a cash reward for information which leads to an arrest and charge.”
