Pensioner mugged in broad daylight

An elderly woman was knocked to the ground and had her bag stolen in Wallsend on Monday.

The woman, in her 80s, was on Carville Gardens at around 1.40pm and making her way towards Union Street when she was approached from behind by a man.

She was pulled to the ground during the struggle, causing injuries to her wrist and leg, for which she is receiving hospital treatment.

Her bag, which is black leather and contained cash and personal items, has not been found.

The man is described by police as aged between 22 and 24, of scruffy appearance and wearing a grey or black hooped jumper.

North Tyneside Chief Inspector Jamie Pitt said: “This was a disgraceful crime carried out in broad daylight targeting an elderly woman who was injured during this incident.

“Extensive enquiries including house-to-house visits are ongoing to trace the man responsible and extra officers will be out and about in the area to provide reassurance.

“We’d ask anyone who was in the area around Carville Gardens yesterday and may have seen or heard anything suspicious to get in touch.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
