Known criminals in North Tyneside are being prevented from entering town centre shopping areas by police.
Operation Turnstile will see teams of officers from North Shields, Whitley Bay, Wallsend and Killingworth present at Metro stations .
They will be warning offenders coming into the different areas to commit crimes they are not welcome and will be turned away.
They will also be speaking to commuters about concerns that affect them in their neighbourhood or when travelling on the Metro.
Chief Inspector Jamie Pitt said: “Operation Turnstile is a preventative measure to stop criminals getting into North Tyneside to commit offences.
“We use intelligence and information to identify known offenders – we know who they are and we are watching them.
“Criminals often travel away from their own area to commit crimes, but they are not welcome in North Tyneside.
“Our officers are continuing to work with partners to combat issues of shoplifting, theft and burglary.”
