The head of North Tyneside area command’s neighbourhood policing teams has been suspended from his position following an allegation of gross misconduct.

Chief Inspector Mark Anastasi, who is responsible for the neighbourhood teams and 24/7 response officers in the borough, is accused of inappropriate behaviour in the work place.

The matter was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC)but then sent back to Northumbria Police to deal with on a local level.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police confirmed the suspension and added: “It must be emphasised that it should not be inferred from the suspension that any misconduct has occurred until it is proven.

“A thorough investigation into the issues is being conducted by the force.”
