A chef at a borough Indian restaurant is cooking up a storm after winning a top national title.

Shikara, in Whitley Road, Whitley Bay, has proved a popular destination since opening in 2012.

Co-owned by Azad Miah and award-winning chef Shohid Ahmed, it offers a range of Bangladeshi and South Asian dishes as well as fusion recipes from India.

Now head chef Shohid has been named the Curry Life Chef Awards ‘Chef of The Year’ at a lavish ceremony in London.

Mr Miah said: “We’re incredibly proud to have won the award thanks to our loyal customer-base.

“Word of mouth recommendations have been key to our growth and we thank our customers for putting us forward for this award.

“We’re really proud to have introduced so many people in the region to the wide and varied flavours offered by Bangladeshi, South Asian and Indian food.

“We hope to continue to share our success with our customers for many years to come and winning this award has been the icing on the cake.”
