A CYCLIST has died after falling from her bike while being overtaken by a bus.

An investigation has been launched after the cyclist, a woman aged 21, was riding along the pavement in Church Bank, close to the junction with Ropery Lane in Wallsend, when she fell off.

Officers say the woman fell off onto the pavement, in the direction of the road, just as a single decker bus was passing her, at 3.45pm on Wednesday, August 22.

They are keen to find out exactly what happened and how she came to fall off her bike, with the road being closed for four hours while investigations took place.

The woman was taken to Newcastle’s RVI hospital for treatment to serious injuries, but she died overnight.

A police spokesperson said: “Her next of kin are being informed.”

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to get in touch.

Specifically, they would like to speak to any passengers on the Go North East Number 1 coast bus who were present on the bus between Wallsend High Street and Rosehill Social Club.

Some witnesses from the bus have been spoken to, but there are others police are yet to identify.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 for the attention of the Road Safety Unit at Etal Lane Police Station.
