A decorator has proved to be the cream of the crop after winning a national award.
Self-employed Robbie Dodds had entered the Dulux Select Decorator of the Year awards in the ‘Jobs over £3,000’ category.
And as well as picking up the award, he was left shocked when he was also named grand winner at the special awards night.
Robbie, of Shiremoor, had put together a dossier of the job at a house in Whitley Bay featuring both before and after photographs, as well as a written report.
Not only was his customer left impressed, but also the judges at Dulux.
Robbie said: “I didn’t expect to pick any award up. The competition is really high every year. Some of the other entrants’ work was really high.
“The job I did was of a very high standard, it’s one of the jobs I am most proud of. It took a lot of time and preparation.
“I thought ‘why not put it forward and give it a try?’
“The job took me about three weeks.”
Robbie won another award in 2012 and admitted his phone almost went into meltdown from a lot of new calls and customers.
“When I appeared in the News Guardian, I had 26 calls in one day from people asking for quotes,” he said. “My phone went mental for months.
“I’ve been self-employed for 22 years, a lot of my work is repeat custom.”
