A local youth worker has received national recognition for his contribution to the local community.
Mike Burgess, a voluntary and community sector worker at the Phoenix Detached Youth Project in North Shields, was shortlisted as a finalist for the National Youth Agency.
Unknown to him, Mike was nominated by his colleagues for his dedication, creativity and contribution to the hundreds of young people he has worked with over the years in the North Shields area.
Although he did not walk away the winner, Mike said: “I was shocked and surprised, but delighted and touched that others put me forward.
“The nomination helps raise the profile of the Phoenix Detached Youth Project, which will help us secure funding to continue our highly successful work.”
Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “Mike epitomises the community spirit we have in our borough, working tirelessly to offer opportunities for our young people to develop their skills and grow in confidence to lead positive lives.”
