Work has begun to demolish a church devastated by fire.

The former Trinity United Reform Church, in Esplanade, Whitley Bay, was left a shell after a major fire ripped through the building on Saturday, May 6.

At the height of the fire, more than 40 firefighters attended and a large plume of smoke could be seen in North Shields and Seaton Sluice.

Crews were at the scene until 2pm the following day, with the fire being extinguished using five main water jets and two Aerial Ladder Platforms.

The church and the adjoining church hall were severely damaged by the fire and seven cars parked on Esplanade Place also suffered minor heat and smoke damage.

A demolition team arrived on site today (Friday) to begin the task of taking down the remaining walls and what was left of the roof structure.
