In the controversy over a possible large scale housing development between Rake Lane and Murton Village, isn’t something being overlooked?
It is now 25 years since the Smith’s Dock/A&P dock yard at North Shields closed. The site was dismantled, dry docks filled in, steel piles driven in to consolidate the waterside, the land graded level, even some interval roads laid.
About 15 years ago, site plans and detailed drawings of houses and apartment blocks for about 350 dwellings were on display at North Shields and Whitely Bay libraries, since then, nothing.
I’m sure that the likes of Bellway, Persimmon or Taylor Wimpey would be delighted to develop this site, accessible to both North and South Shields town centres.
When the Brigham and Cowan and Tyne Dock Engineering yards closed in the 1980s within five years a mixed development of housing and flats had arisen in their places.
So how about some action, North Tyneside Council?
