Dialogue will continue with businesses on parking issues

I READ the recent article (News Guardian, October 20) regarding parking in Tynemouth with great interest and indeed sympathy for high street traders and businesses generally.

We are in unprecedented times with the current financial challenges faced by businesses in addition to increased competition from online shopping.

At the same time the council must be mindful of the wishes of residents when designing parking schemes and striking a balance can be a very unforgiving task.

The council consulted widely, and at length, on the proposals which were then presented to its planning committee.

On completion of the scheme the council undertook a residents’ survey.

There was a high response rate of nearly 80 per cent with 95 per cent of the respondents favouring the scheme.

Some changes have been made to support local businesses and I know the dialogue continues to help and support local trade.
