Digging up park’s historical past

Amateur archaeologists are being invited to get their hands dirty in the next phase of a project uncovering medieval secrets in Northumberland Park, North Shields.

The remains of a 13th century hospital were found on the site of the former St Leonard’s Hospital during a dig in 2011.

And Heritage Lottery Funding means another dig can take place.

St Leonard’s is believed to have been used to treat leprosy sufferers, with the latest dig looking for new evidence.

Anyone can volunteer for the dig in September. Those interested in knowing more are invited to a meeting at the Linskill Centre, North Shields, on Wednesday, August 28, at 6pm.
