NEW houses could be built on the site of a former cinema and bingo hall.
Isos Developments is hoping to create 33 homes on the site, at the junction of High Street East, Coronation Street and Park Road in Wallsend.
A former garage would also have to be demolished to make way for the proposed homes.
The Newcastle-based developer has applied to North Tyneside Council for planning consent for three terraced houses and 30 flats built in three and four-storey blocks on the site.
Neighbours of the site have objected to the proposals, however, and more than 50 have signed a petition opposing the application.
They say that building more houses in that part of town will add to current parking problems faced by residents of Park Road.
They also express concerns about privacy and access for refuse wagons.
Further fears have been expressed about potential contamination of land at the part of the site previously used as a garage.
The future of the 2,140sq m council-owned site is expected to be decided within the next few weeks at a planning committee meeting.
