A sexual health drop-in in North Shields has been given national recognition for work to make it more young people friendly.
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust’s drop in service at The Avenue Youth Centre in Meadowell has achieved the ‘You’re Welcome’ status for engaging young people to help influence how the service operates.
Michele Hook, senior specialist nurse at the service for the trust, said: “We are really pleased to receive this award.
“It is credit to the young people who came along to the youth club who have given their views about how our drop-in service should be run in order to make it more accessible to them.
“It is also down to the ethos of the staff at The Avenue who have supported this work.
“The accreditation shows how well our staff are engaging with young people and encouraging them to get involved with their local health service.”
Young people helped design displays and promotional materials for the drop-in services, as well as decorating the consultation room and giving feedback as to how the service should work.
And their involvement has also helped expand their knowledge of health issues and enabled them to direct their friends to support services if they need them.
