A BOROUGH band established in 1871 has received a letter of thanks from the Duchess of Northumberland.

The Backworth Colliery Band recently performed at Alnwick Castle as thousands of carers and volunteer service members met the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.

Band secretary Teresa Harris said: “Backworth Band was invited as representing the tradition of colliery bands in what was the Northumberland coalfield.

“Over the years the band has played at Alnwick Castle on many occasions so it seems we were the natural choice.

“We were delighted to offer our services on this occasion, especially on a Royal visit, and were able to turnout a full band, complete with percussion.”

The musicians were allotted the castle kitchen cellars as a band room, which turned out to be the scene of Harry Potter’s adventures at Hogworts School, so for the young members it was an extra special experience.

Players of brass instruments are invited to check the band out at The Backworth Club, Station Road, on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings to see if they like the experience of playing a wide variety of music.
