PUPILS and staff are celebrating the opening of their rebranded school.

Stead Lane First School in Bedlington has changed its name to Stead Lane Primary School, and Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery was invited to cut a ribbon to declare it open.

Mr Lavery was given a tour of the school while pupils were treated to a disco, sweets and juice to mark the occasion.

Headteacher Louise Mallin said: “Mr Lavery was the obvious choice because he has always talked so passionately about the school.

“The children had a fantastic day.”

She added: “Opening as a primary is fantastic for us because we will be able to work with the children until the end of key stage two.

“The staff know the children’s strengths and what motivates them, and we have so much belief in what the children can achieve.

“That is a big thing for us here – our pride in the children.

“This has all been about raising the standards.”
