A coffee shop owner is hoping to spread her wings and land a national title.

Emma Mowbray, who co-owns My Place in the White Swan Centre, Killingworth, with her mum Judith, is one of 13 entrants in the north east semi-final of the Sandwich Designer of the Year 2016 competition.

Judges chose two of her recipes from around 300 entries in the competition run by British Sandwich and Food to Go Association, with the semi-final taking place on March 9.

The 13 entrants will be taking part in six categories for their chance to proceed to the grand final, during British Sandwich Week in May.

Emma said: “I am delighted to have reached the semi-final stage and am looking forward to creating my recipes for the judging panel.”

Her recipes are a lightly toasted New York bagel thin filled with Harvey and Brockless chipotle sauce, Applewood cheese, rocket and freshly sliced tomato. The second is a warm tortilla wrap, filled with Browne pulled venison, topped with pear and prune chutney.

British Sandwich and Food to Go Association’s Director, Jim Winship, said: “The North East Semi-Final is a true mirror on the industry with artisanal independents, catering companies and large scale manufacturers going head to head.

“It’s fascinating to see how the styles differ so greatly and how the interpretation of a great British classic varies.”
