Families descend on beach for sandcastles competition

Hundreds of families showcased their design and construction skills as a popular event returned to an award winning beach.

Young and old descended on Whitley Bay beach last Sunday to take part in the annual Whitley Bay Sandcastle competition.

Taking place on the stretch of beach outside the Rendezvous Cafe, there was a wide selection of creative designs and entries.

Brother and sister Theo and Sophia Handa took first place in the sand sculpture category at the competition with their palm tree design, featuring sea weed and moss to add a touch of colour.

They pipped Tom and Ben Westgarth who took one of the runners up spots with their castle and moat while a shark also found favour with the judges.

The event – organised by Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade, with support from North Tyneside Council – was part of the many events taking place around the borough for the authority’s North Tyneside Summer Festival.

As well as the competition, there was also entertainment on the promenade and face painting to keep children and participants busy.

Each participant was given a goody bag and medal at the end of the event.
