Bosses and staff at a Killingworth company are celebrating after winning a prestigious national award.
NBT Group scooped the Northern Family Business of the Year accolade at the Family Business United’s annual national awards ceremony, held in London.
The awards recognise the contribution that family businesses make to the economy.
NBT Group – the only north east company to get through to the public voting stage – was shortlisted alongside Slaters menswear and fragrance producer Floris London, with the Killingworth firm coming out top in the North of England, North Wales and Northern Ireland category.
Established more than 100 years ago, NBT Group is now in its fourth generation of management with the founder’s great grandson, Toby Bridges, at the helm.
He said: “When we heard that we’d been shortlisted and were the only north east company in the running we were thrilled. However, scooping the gong for overall winner of the Northern category has really bowled us over.”
Toby added: “We were up against some stiff competition, so to be publicly recognised in the same vein as them is a tremendous feat. It’s a great honour and I’m immensely proud of the NBT team.”
One of the judges and chairman of SandAire, Alexander Scott, said: “NBT Group clearly demonstrated in their submission the values that are important to them, and their appreciation of the need to constantly evolve in order to survive from generation to generation.
“They represent a great British family business success story in the north east and are worthy ambassadors for the family business sector.”
