An award winning business has scooped more national honours.

Whitley Bay’s ice cream kings have struck again, winning a top award at the prestigious National Ice Cream Competition, organised by the Ice Cream Alliance.

The Di Meo family – who run their ice cream parlour on Marine Avenue – scooped the award for the best artisan dairy ice cream, beating off competition from around the UK.

The family run parlour has twice been voted the best in the UK.

Armando Di Meo, who runs the business with his sons Luciano and Romano and daughter Rosa, said the recipe dated back more than 100 years.

He said: “It is a very old recipe and we are definitely not changing it.

“It is a traditional ice cream full of goodness and flavour.”

Luciano, who was crowned UK Champion in 2013 and 2014, started making ice cream as a young boy following a family tradition.

He said: “I was taught the secrets of making ice cream by my grandfather when I was eight years old and now it is in my blood.

“It is my passion and my life.”

Zelica Carr, chief executive of The Ice Cream Alliance, said: “The Di Meo family have consistently produced outstanding ice cream and to keep winning these accolades year in year out against the best ice cream makers in the UK is a remarkable achievement.”

Di Meo’s also won a silver medal in the frozen yogurt class and a bronze in the artistic class.

The Ice Cream Alliance is the trade body for the UK’s £1bn ice cream industry and attracts entries from the best ice cream makers in the UK and Ireland.
