FORMER Newcastle United striker Paul Cannell has given an insight into life as a Magpie with a no holds-barred book.

The former terraces hero, made famous by a Jasper Carrott joke, played for his home town club between 1971 and 1978 before jetting off to America for four successful seasons.

Now he has put his memories and stories down on paper after fans were enthralled by his countless stories.

In his self published book entitled “F*****’ Hell it’s Paul Cannell”, he talks about how United manager Joe Harvey talked him out of a potential law career and joining rivals Sunderland to sign for the Magpies.

Paul, who now lives in North Shields, also recounts tales involving United legends Malcolm Macdonald, Frank Clark, Willie McFaul, Joe Harvey and more.

And there is an insight into football in America, and what went on away from the pitch as well as games against football legends including Pele.
