A North Shields organisation donated £500 to the Royal National Institute of Blind People in support of a local man who completed the Great North Run.
Peter Gilberg, 28, from Tynemouth, was inspired to tackle the famous half marathon for the first time this year in memory of his grandmother, Gladys Bonfield, who lost her sight in an accident.
He raised £740 from family and friends but was thrilled when Freemasons from the Haven Lodge in North Shields, where his late grandfather had been a master, decided to add to his total.
The donation was made from the Richard Henry Holmes Masonic Benevolent Fund, which supports Freemasons and their families .
The cheque was handed over at the RNIB office in Wallsend by the lodge’s current master, the Reverend Alan Oates.
Peter’s sponsorship total reached £1,240 for the RNIB.
